They were joined in the ranks of outstanding candidates by Liam Collins, who scored an impressive nine A*s and four As, and Michael Mortimer, who performed best of all with 11 A*s and three As.

Liam, who is set to study biology, chemistry, physics and maths at Farnborough Sixth Form College next year, said: "I was expecting something along these lines but for it to actually happen is unbelievable, I am overwhelmed.

"I am heading home now where I'm sure there will be some tears!"

Of the 265 students entered this year, 52 per cent attained A*-C in English and maths.

The college scored C+ and +0.08 on the new Attainment 8 and Progress 8 measures respectively.
